Girard Borough is best known for being the home of circus owner Dan Rice. Tucked alongside the Lake Erie coast, a borough with a broad history and a show town past bears the name Girard, Pennsylvania.
Some of America's most notable pioneers, soldiers, showmen, and businessmen have strolled past buildings that still stand today on Main Street. The rich heritage of Girard Borough continues to be celebrated through community events and the preservation of historic landmarks.
Dan Rice: America's Most Famous Clown
Dan Rice (1823-1900) was one of the most famous entertainers of the 19th century. As a clown, showman, and circus owner, he was known as "America's Favorite Clown" and was one of the wealthiest and most recognized performers of his era. Rice made Girard his home, and his legacy continues to be celebrated in the borough through the annual Dan Rice Days festival.
